What lessons was Noach teaching his children & the world by naming them
Sheim
Chom &
Yefes ?

3 great fundamentals for serving Hashem.
1- shom means to be there. To apply oneself wholeheartedly to the mitzva at hand.

2- Chom means to warm up to do it with enthusiasm.

3- & add beauty to show that we care.

Fw: What Should Our Intention Be?

What Should Our Intention Be?

The Holiday of Succos is this week. This holiday has two unique commandments: We are to dwell in a sukkah (a hut), and we are to take the “four species” (the citron [esrog], date palm branch, myrtle, and willow branches).

We take the four species, and our custom is to shake, or wave them in all directions. What should we think about when we do this most unusual mitzvah?  The Rabbis tell us one possible meaning: These four species of plants represent Jews in four stages of service to Hashem, and we are bringing them together from all directions. Nice idea, but is this what are we supposed to be thinking about when we do this mitzvah?

Judging from the very serious looks that I see on the faces of many religious Jews when they perform this mitzvah, I assume that their intention is to serve G-d. And when they serve G-d, they concentrate their minds on the intense seriousness of the moment.

But what does G-d say that we should do when we take these four species? The Torah clearly tells us that we should take these four and “…you shall rejoice before Hashem.…”[i] If you take them and shake them without joy, you did not do the mitzvah as it is commanded. You have to be happy.

We are commanded by the Creator of the Universe to rejoice at this time. Is there any better reason then this to be happy?

Wishing you a wonderful, healthy New Year; May it be a year filled with both spiritual and physical prosperity, a year when you live up to your greatest expectations, make lots of people happy, see your family grow, have all of your needs met, a year when you please G-d so much that He looks down from the Highest Heaven and says, "Bless you, bless you. I am so happy that I created you."

10 Reasons

For Shofar

Rabeinu Saadya Gaon teaches that there are 10 lessons of inspiration that we should focus on when hearing a Shofar blast.
1 - we blow on Rosh Hashana as part of the program to proclaim Hashem as our King.
2- it serves to wake us up to remember our purpose in life.
3- it reminds us of the Shofar blowing at Matan Torah.
4- it reminds us of the messages of all of the Prophets which are also as Shofar wake up calls.
5- reminds us of the noise by the destruction of the Beis Hamigdosh which we pray Hashem should rebuild.
6- reminds us of Akeida where an animal with horns was slaughtered instead of Yitzchak. We learn to be as devoted as the Avos.
7- the sound inspires us to fear Hashem.
8- reminds us of the great day of judgment in the future.
9- pray the great Shofar blast that will usher in the redemption.
10- reminds us of the great wake up of Techiyas Hameisim.

Our Sages say - In the merit of Bikurim which are called the first fruits , Hashem created the world.

Why is this so significant ?

The word for rishon , first is the same as rosh , the head.

4 forms of Life

The Talmud teaches there are 4 types of people that are considered as dead. These are especially relevant in our preparations for praying for a new year of life.
A poor person
A blind one
A Leper &
Childless.
We need to pray to avoid poverty & health issues , & to pray for healthy & happy children & grandchildren.

We need to also thank Hashem daily for all of the help He has been providing us with on these fronts.

This month we prepare for our annual review.
One of the most important ways to do so is to develop some true gratitude to Hashem for some of the many gifts He keeps providing for us.

Shiduch Questions
How smart is he ?

One needs to be careful to ascertain the level of Torah knowledge that is being requested. To Know how to learn , can have numerous interpretations & it depends on many factors.
What about street smarts ?
One must be careful to avoid making it sound like the person is a fool , if he is not that street smart.
What about health issues ?
It may be revealed in an accurate manner. But one may not say the person seems to have a weakness , if that is not an illness.
What about saying old historical issues about either side ?
It is not permitted.
What about if there are pritzus issues ?

One should say.
What if you think one side may not fulfill their monetary commitments ?

*Consider , maybe the other side is planning the same & it is a match.
Thus don't say a thing.

* Don't jump to conclusions. There are people who don't seem to have much , but they have saved for years to put funds aside to support their children studying Torah.

One who hears someone speaking Loshon Hora against others & he anticipates that he will keep on delivering his sinful message to others , it is better to try to intercept the evil by telling those people what may happen. Of course the 7 conditions are required.

The victim himself may speak to those who might help him with the 7 conditions as follows -

1- He must be sure.
2 - He must check on all the halachic details
3- search for a way to confront & straighten out the issue.
4- it may be sufficient his need to calm his worries.
5- if can accomplish his purpose even by diminishing the crime a bit that would be better.
6- this may change if the perpetrator would refuse to obey Beis Din.
7- be careful not to exaggerate.

We require 7 conditions before one is permitted to say constructive words -
1- To be sure of the facts

2- to be sure that there is no halachic justification for the seeming injustice.

3- first offer gentle rebuke

4- the intention should be only to help the unfortunate victim , to lessen the suffering of the victim ,
- to get people to avoid evil & improve their ways.
* This can only work if the speaker & the listeners are not guilty of the same sins they are denouncing.

5- there is no alternative to avoid the loshon hora or to delete the name of the perpetrator.
6 - The results will not be more than what Beis Din would decide if the case came to them.
7- don't exaggerate the crime.

Dealing with an Apikores
There is a Mitzva to speak against one who denies the Torah or any portion of the Torah.

Dealing with an outright sinner
One may speak negatively about those who are obviously wicked -

- if you saw the wicked deeds.
- they are definite sins.

- speak in public also if possible.

How to Repent
If someone did listen , even though he did not accept any of it -

He should try to re frame the story to explain it in a positive light.

If he did believe it -

How to React
If others speak gossip -

1- explain gently & firmly that it is not permitted.

2- if that will make things worse , change the topic
3 - if that fails - leave the scene or use your fingers as ear plugs.

4 - if that's not possible
A - decide not to believe the words ,
B - to be upset with being there

C- sit as a silent stone & better yet with an angry face.

Review - 10

One may not even listen to words of Loshon Hora , even if he does not plan to believe the words.
However , one may listen if there is a chance it may bring about some benefit such as to protect oneself or others from trouble.
But he may only listen if the speaker also has constructive intentions or the speaker began talking to others before he came.
Thus if someone begins saying negative about someone , we should ask first - is this relevant for me in the future. ?
If someone complains about others , make sure to get all the details so that you can clarify & rectify the situation properly.
When one is only allowed to be careful , but not to believe the Loshon Hora , one may not act in any way different than to treat that person as a fellow Jew.
For example , if there were poor people who were eligible to receive charity , but now there are rumors that they are a fraud , one must still give them charity until the matter is clarified.

If someone tells you that they lost their case at Beis Din who must be corrupt etc. What should you say ?

Say that Beis Din tries to do their best. If you lost , obviously Hashem had it happen for some reason. If you should have won the case , Hashem will surely reimburse your loss some other way.

Preface
There are 35 possible transgressions that one may violate if he keeps on talking without learning the halachic guidelines.

1 - there are 2 types of Loshon Hora - saying negative things about a person , or saying words that may cause harm.

Learning from the Best -92.

Who is wise ?
One who learns from all people. Avos 4:1.
Why from all , why not from one good person ?
Even great people may not be perfect. We are human & have many types of challenges.
The way to succeed is to learn the right lessons from many types of people. Take the best lessons from the best & avoid the negative. Focus on what you need to learn with Hashems help.
Even a persons shortcoming can serve as a vital lesson that we are vulnerable & need to strive to overcome the challenges. Every setback can stimulate us & serve as a stepping stone to a greater level of growth.

Value people - 91

Loshon Hora includes saying anything negative about a person , any blemish & any type of shortcoming. Anything that may cause the person physical or financial harm , pain or fear in any form.
Don't sell anyone short. What you say about people reflects what you feel they are worth. You need to always be alert not to hurt others by any of your words.

More Exceptions -90

The so called news media has been called Dangerous.

It can drastically change a persons day & mood & ruin ones perspective. What is generally presented as news is contrary to the Torahs teachings of reality & how Hashem wants us to live.
We are here to serve Hashem with joy. To uplift others , to connect with Hashem & to strive to improve ourselves.
The news in general is a form of loshon hora by highlighting , dramatizing & presenting rare situations as if they represent the proper norm.
To live a happier , more positive , healthier & peaceful life , we need to avoid focusing on the news in the wrong way.
We need to learn & pay attention to the Good news , that Hashem is providing in abundance.
We need to say with feeling , this too is good. Boruch Hashem

Word Exceptions -89

There is a Mitzva to speak up and teach such guidelines -

* Don't live in that place because there are negative influences upon people there. C. C. 4:10:41.

* Don't hang out with so & so because he behaves with arrogance or anger or wastes time from Torah study etc , and you have to avoid so that you do not learn from his negative ways.

##
The explanation for these exceptions is that the primary prohibition of Loshon Hora is when the intention is to demean others & rejoice over their shame , but to protect others from negative influences is a Mitzva.

Stories behind Words - 88

All words have stories behind them but we need to determine which stories to tell. We need to highlight life-giving stories that keep on helping us grow continuously.
Each year we re learn the Parshiyos of the Torah on deeper & higher levels & we need to asses which stories to amplify & replace. We need to develop our creativity & realize how much abundance & infinite potential Hashem blesses us with.
The choices are ours. Which words do we want to use to take us where we want to go ?

Pain = Gain -87

Yes , it is a Mishna Avos 5:23.

But we need to understand the concept. Pain can be a test to see how committed we are to the Mitzva we are doing.
The Mesilas Yeshorim sums up our purpose in life in 3 steps
To perform Mitzvos
To serve Hashem &
To withstand tests.
The more difficulties one encounters in doing what's right , the more rewards for his accomplishment.
In order to enjoy life more , we need to focus on speaking right. One who seems to have more challenges in speech control , should realize that it is a gold mine of an opportunity. Let him devote himself to mastering the laws of proper speech & strike it rich. You will reap huge rewards by focusing on overcoming your urge to speak negative words.

Time is a Decision - 86

One who says , I don't have time , its like saying , I don't want to.
We control how we use our time. It is a gift of 168 hours a week from Hashem to use per our choice.
You are in charge & your choices are important.
What needs your attention most now ?
The words you use , the NO to wasting time , and the YES to more joyous time for what matters to you , makes the difference.

Words of Healing - 85

We say in our daily prayers -
Please bring up a complete healing to all of our wounds.

Although Hashem is invisible , He is the great physician to Whom nothing is impossible. He is the Creator of all & the Healer who can heal all.
We need to focus our thoughts & words of prayer to Him. We can merit help from Hashem by shifting our thoughts to focus on that He is the loyal doctor who is most compassionate. We have the power to merit being healed by Hashem & also to pray for others to be healed , by changing our thoughts to focus sincerely on our prayers.

Our words of prayer can make our world.

Words of Connection -84

A method for dealing with loneliness is to realize that it is an inner reminder for a person to reach out & connect more with others. Phone friends more , make plans to meet & take walks together etc.
Reach out to your loved ones , don't ignore them. There are times to reach out & many Mitzvos that we can do better with others.
The Talmud has an amazing statement which highlights the great significance of learning to interact more with others -
Either one has friends or death ...

Words of Lonliness -83

We are tempted to put things off for later. To conquer our laziness , our Sages train us to always say -
If not now , When ?
But there is another factor as well. We are reluctant to do things by ourselves due to loneliness. Thus , finding a partner to work with helps things move faster , smoother & with more joy.
We thrive on guidance , reassurance & encouragement. Gaining the support of others is very helpful to help us achieve our goals.
Even a few words of Chizuk can do wonders to help people achieve great goals.

Words of Resentment - 82

Words need the right timing , Mishley 15:23.

The Mishna Avos 4:18 , cautions - Do not appease someone while he is angry.
Resentment may accumulate at times , people become cold & hostile to each other. We realize it is time to make peace , but how do we start ?
While the anger is seething , it will not work. Don't try to make up before letting go of the anger.
Start talking things over. Realize you both have some flaws , both have some admirable qualities , express some appreciation & gratitude & both sides apologize.

Love & pursue peace , love people ...

Words of Thanks - 81

To protect ourselves from saying negative words , it pays to strive to be extreme in saying such positive words as - Thank you.
Gratitude is a fundamental obligation of being a person., to appreciate all of the many favors & gifts we enjoy from others regularly.
There are many people who have been very helpful in many ways to teach others how to get ahead & succeed in life.
We are actually taught on this weeks Parsha 10:12 , that the Torah is hinting to the Mitzva to say at least 100 thank you Brochos daily.
We also need to learn another Mitzva phrase which are sweet words that people enjoy & can make ones day - you re Welcome.

Good to All - w. 80

This too is for the Good.

One of the insights in this Talmudic saying is that Hashem has everyones benefit in mind.
At times we need to decline & say we are unable at the present to do something for someone. But then we may think we are letting the person down. The truth however is that if this opportunity was not for you Hashem has other & maybe better ways of helping them.
You need to follow the Torah guidelines of when & how to help others & to know that Hashem is still running the whole world , as always , & He knows who needs what , when.

There are times when you are more productive , vigorous & enthusiastic. ! We can extend those times by focusing on then more & making them the vision of how we see ourselves.

You are capable , competent , a good person. Hashem has invested a lot in you to this point & He is eager to do much more for you as soon as you choose to run with it.

Words of Apology - 78

What may be the very greatest of the 7 steps of the truly wise is the last one - to admit to the truth.
It heals , leads to change , saying I'm sorry shows that you really care for the person & you are going to set things straight.

The greatest Word Skill - 77

We have a unique Mishna which teaches us the great goal of becoming a disciple of Aharon !
We then describe 4 of his attributes that we need to achieve. The question has been raised , which of the 4 qualities may be considered the greatest of them all ?

A suggestion is the third - loving people & that it was his ultimate secret. He would listen to each person & make them feel as if he were their very best friend & that they were the only person in the room at the time.
To develop this skill will change our lives & enable us to follow in the footsteps of Aharon Hacohen.
To devote your full attention to someone , focus on them completely is a super skill that we need to develop.
Consider when you have a meeting with your big boss , you know how to do this well , because you are convinced it matters.
Really great people do this all the time , with every person.

Don't forget & don't get distracted , it will make a great difference in your life.

Listening to Words - 76

To succeed in learning from all people , we need to learn how to listen well. It is not only a passive activity ,rather an active process.
There are 4 parts to the process as we see them divided in the Mishna Avos 5:10 , as the first 4 principles which define a Wise person -

First step - Listen with Respect

Think who is speaking & why are they significant ? We need to show that we respect the speaker & demonstrate that we are eager to listen to them. Act as if the speaker is the only person around.

Second Step - Don't interrupt

The way you face the person , from your eyes to your body language , can communicate how important they are & how you desire to hear what they want to say.
Step 3 - Don't rush to Respond
Think before you speak to respond. All of these steps require discipline. The more you think it over & consider the meaning & value of the message you just heard , you demonstrate how you value the speaker.
Step 4 - Listen Well & prepare your response
Think , do I have all the necessary information. ?
What will be the consequences of my response ?
Will my response hurt anyone ?
Even if my response is the truth , is it worth it to say it now ?

It takes determination , motivation , prayer & effort & Hashem will lead you to achieve. Hashem helps us with abundant success when we focus properly.
Hashem encourages us - Open your mouth wide & I will fill it up.
This is part of the system of , He used to say , which is a method of developing the right focus by means of ongoing review.
But words are not all , the main point is the resulting action (Avos ).

Word Awakening - 73

A mean word coming at you can change ones life & awaken a person to some major blessings. People have decided to focus on what do they really want to do with their lives.
We need to listen well to the gentle nudge so that we can be spared from having to deal with a rude awakening. Every word has a purpose.
Should we get angry at the messenger ?

Not much. When we realize that it was sent by Hashem who has tons of messengers at His disposal , we will relax a bit.
Instead , we should consider thanking & appreciating a critic who may be one of your best teachers.

If its true , correct it ,
If not , forget it.

The Tenth Commandment is not to be envious of others. This is so significant because it is a form of counting other peoples blessings instead of your own.
Rather , we are taught to learn from all others. We should realize if Hashem showed me what He gave so & so He is hinting that He is eager to do the same for me.
No one can take anything away from you , if Hashem wants it for you. Hashem closes the 10 with this Mitzva to highlight how significant it is to know that Hashem is always giving us all that we need to become who we can be.

We need to visualize it as we buckle down to take small steps , such as reading one point at a time of this book.

2- Why say things that can have a negative effect on the speaker also to think as a fool , who do not understand the real truth , Tehilim 92:7.

The answer is that He was connected to Hashem the source of all wealth. The secret to abundance is to open our mind & heart to Hashem. The key to prosperity is to rejoice with ones portions - all those gifts we keep on receiving from Him.

We need to focus on Hashems unlimited supply , the abilities He gave us to be creative , to expand & increase. Hashem is our supplier , we will never lack , Tehilim 23.

Beyond Words -65

Are words the greatest form of expression ?
Often , there are other forms , such as simply being there , that matters even more. Some people have said to others , the one thing that meant the most was knowing that you are always there for me. Being there for someone is so vital , so meaningful.
The benefit of a bikur cholim visit is well known to assist in recovery , just being there matters most , well beyond words.
This helps us understand the Mishna in Avos 1:15 -
Greet & accept every person with a pleasant , thoughtful face.

Self-Talk - 63

Which is worse , having others say Loshon Hora about a person or having that person say it about themselves ?

Imagine someone who protects himself from stray germs from outside , but they inflict themselves with constant negativity & pollution.

A person can hurt himself with internal criticism & negative self - talk. When a person cries & complains when they should be thinking & thanking Hashem for the constant flow of happiness He is sending our way all the time.

The Talmud says that the third person is one with a character flaw.
His manner of expression is a clue to what he is all about. Better than a handwriting analysis , we have a word usage profile.

Choosing Words - 54

Here are some tips on finding the best words & feeling better.
1. Relax your mind & emotions, realize that Hashem will help you & enjoy the process. When you focus on loving the days Hashem provides , He will expand your time to get more done.
2. Hashem has ways of providing you with an abundance of the right words at the right time.
3. Keep good cheer & joy at the top of your list of priorities. Don't rush , think instead , how can I enjoy this project Hashem is sending my way. ?

Words of Judgement - 53.

We are always judging issues & situations.
Thus the C. C. Teaches a great , primary rule in these matters (3:7).
If one errs & judges someone to the negative & then speaks against that person , it is a double crime for he also transgreses the Mitzva to judge others favorably.
We tend to have mistaken assumptions. We may be wrong in thinking we know why someone is doing something you think should be different. We think we know better , how things should be.

Stop judging negatively , be positive & get a double mitzva.
Gossip begins in ones mind , based on the way we perceiove things. We need to change the way we look at things , to always use Torah vision.

Words that Lead - 50

There is a most fundamental verse In Tehilim - Hashem is informing us - Open your mouth wide & I will fill it up !

If the mouth is left without control it leads to sin , thus if the Peh / mouth comes first we have pesha.
If we place shtika first , with a shin for silence & mouth control - we have Shefa.
That is why Mishlei 10:18 says
With excessive speech one cannot refrain from pesha.

Positive Words - 38

Every word we say can be in a positive way or negative.
Good or not bad !
Half full or half empty. !
Kosher , not kosher or treifa.
Its not true , its a lie.
The Talmud teaches that the one who always used the positive became a great Torah sage.
Why ?
Words are decisions.
To tell someone something is not kosher is better than saying it is treif. It is more caring & less hurtful.

Words make the Difference - 37

What is the difference between one who says I feel like a tired goat or like a tired p-i - g ?
The Ge mara teaches that it is a good idea to stay away from the second type of person.

Why ?

Words are like name labels , they also influence the person. Even the clothing we wear influences a person , the words we speak surely change us , word by word. As we use kind & gentle words , we become more like that.
A person was created in Hashems image. He also has certain animilistic tendencies in order to challenge him to grow.
Now it is true that Hashem created all , even non kosher animals & there are many lessons we learn from them , such as - be strong as a lion to fulfill the will of your Heavenly Father. But Kosher animals were permitted for food in order to provide us with energy in order to study Torah.
We need to also develop our positive Torah self - esteem by saying Hashem created this world for my benefit ! Sanhedrin 37a.
