The Chofetz Chaim cites 3:6:7 , the Rabeinu Yonah that their are two parts to gossip -
The harm & shame to the victim ,
& the choice to speak words that negate someone & rejoice in their pain. Thus the C. C. Teaches that if one spoke with the awareness that no harm will result to the victim , it is still forbidden.
We are suggesting a step further even if one is alone in a room the Torah does not want a person to vilify another.
Now may be a good time for a gem of Torah study.

Words in a Forest - 49
What if someone speaks negative words about someone but he is alone in a forest , is it forbidden ?
