Shield of Armor - W. 33
One simple difference is that Hashem has provided us with the brains & the capacity to put on a sweater , jacket or coat as it gets colder. We can also walk in to a warmer place & turn up the heat.
The tree is rooted to its position , however , in the sun or cold weather. Thus Hashem provides it with a " thick skin " to cope with the elements.
But how do we know when to go where & what to wear ?
Hashem has designed skin receptors that register heat , cold , contact , pressure & pain. This skin wrapper , grows & regrows with the person to fit snugly & securely around us perfectly.
Look at the amazing network of lines on your hands to accomodate all of the flexing movements that your miraculous fingers & hands are capable of , Baruch Hashem.

W. 31. Productive Trees
The Talmud asks why does use comparisons to two types of trees ?
Bava Basra 80b explains that there are many forms of growth & greatness.
A tree reminds us to grow - steadily , patiently , quietly , for long -term success in serving Hashem.
Don't be like grass. Short lived ,without deep roots , no shade , no fruit , fleeting ...

Tree Wonders - 30
Shlomo hamelech the wisest of all , as we are taught in Melochim 1:5:13.
How many trees do you pass by every day ? And how often do you thank & praise Hashem for them ?
Every tree you pass is an opportunity for growth as we think about Hashem who created it & keeps it growing.
One example -
The Talmud ( Beitza 25b) teaches how certain plants whose roots grow straight down serve as a model of always avoid stealing & trespassing on the property of others.
We can say a similar idea - a tree stays in place no matter how much you will insult it or reprimand it. It keeps on doing what it does , to serve Hashem by doing its job , with steadfast , persistence , which we should learn.

Wonders 24. Mouth Miracles
How is it that every person has a unique voiceprint which enables us to identify many people by hearing them speak ?
The Talmud ( Sanhedrin 38 ) teaches that Hashem created every person with a unique face & thought patterns , fingerprints & voice. This corresponds to our actions , speech & thoughts for which each person has special purposes to accomplish in life.
Since hadaoh vehadibur, the intellect & speech are linked together , each person has their vocal cords , housed in their windpipe for their power of expression.
Hashem , please open my lips & empower my mouth to relate Your praise ( Tehillim ).

Wonders -16 - Heads Up
Who created these ! Yeshaya 40:26
If you could have 5 wishes granted by Hashem , would one of them be to be able to fly ?
Why did Hashem decide not to provide humans with wings ? Obviously , because it is better for them this way.
Birds were designed with special lightweight bones to enable them to be able to fly as befits their needs.
How often do we intentionally observe the flight of some of Hashems flying marvels & exclaim - wow ! Amazing.
Why did Hashem create these ?
One reason is so that we should learn to invent flying machines that can imitate many of the features of birds.

Wonders 8 - White Teeth
The Talmud ( kesubos 111b) speaks about this. Why did Hashem also make milk white ?
There is a connection. White is a color that is symbolic of cleanliness , purity & gentleness. A pleasant , white SMILE relaxes people as it shows them that you care about them & are happy to see them.
Thus the gemara teaches that showing the white of your teeth to others in a pleasant smile is a greater kindness than just offerring someone a delicious cup of healthy , nutritious , white milk. Giving the milk is also a kindness but giving a smile is much greater because it demonstrates your thoughts & feelings a out that person. You care about them.

So too , we need to always keep on reviewing our Torah studies so that we understand them with more clarity , sharpness & depth.
The word shinui ( change ) is also used because the food is changed as one continues to chew it. In learning as well , we become different in an elevated sense as we progress in our studies.

Wonders 6 -Sharp Edge
- one reason is because they come as a set of two ( shnayim ) as they function together. They serve to remind us that throughout life we should strive to work with teams. Two are better than one ( koheles ).
Marriage , our Sages teach , is actually two parts of One person functioning together.
- Another insight is that every person gets two sets of teeth , 20 baby teeth & then 32 for the rest of life. Why does Hashem make it this way ?
Furthermore , even the baby teeth do not begin to emerge until later when a baby begins to switch fron nursing to eating. Obviously , Hashem designs the initial mouth for sucking , not chewing.
One of the reasons only the mouth has a change of teeth is to teach us that throughout our lives we must remember to always gaurd our mouths & tongues.
- another reason is that the teeth cut the food into two.

Wonders 4 -Dual purposes
There seem to be possible dangers in this arrangement if a person is not careful to fulfill the Halachic obligation
Not to talk while chewing food , for it could cause choking if food gets into the windpipe.
Why did Hashem position the windpipe next to the foodpipe in the first place ?
We can ask a question , which is more important eating or speaking ?
A person cannot live without eating , but what happens if we avoid speaking ? If someone refrains from eating for a day they would become weak , if someone refrains from speech they may become wiser.
The way the Talmud ( taanis 5b) puts it - one may not speak while chewing food because the windpipe may open & lead to danger.
We can say that Hashem did this to train & remind us - to always think before speaking - will these words lead to danger ??
Mishlei (18) teaches - life & death are in the hands of the tongue.

The Chazon Ish writes in his letters ( 3:149) that one who does not want to observe Shabos may not be able to make ends meet without working on that holiest of days (G-d forbid ).
Rav Shteinman shlita explains that it is based on the principle of our book. In Heaven they deal with a person based on his behavior. Defining Desire - step 96
The key is to develop a burning , compelling desire. In Avos ch. 5 we learn " Run as a deer to fulfill the desire of your Father in Heaven.
What does this mean ? Can a person run as fast as a deer ?
The answer is a deer is completely focused on its goal to chase after food or to flee its enemy. It runs with a full , determined exclusive intensity which we can learn to develop & apply at our own pace.

The Rambam explains the signifigance of the word Adam in this formula.
People are the only species in the world who can think , choose & decide to do what's right. We have the priveleged gift of Free-will to choose to follow the path of virtue & perfection.
This principle is the great foundation of Torah & Mitzvos.
***
But the Rambam asks - How can a person choose to do something that Hashem does not want like a sin ?
The Rambam answers that is Hashems choice to allow & enable a person to make certain decisions & that is why he is held accountable for his decisions. There are rewards & punishments.

The Rambam has two chapters on this topic in Hilchos Teshuva #5 & #6 where he says -

Running indicates desire & eagerness. Why is it essential to run to perform Mitzvos ?
Ruach Chaim explains that to run is a mitzva in itself of showing that you appreciate the opportunity. As a reward for that Hashem will enable you to perform the actual mitzva as well.
The same applies to fleeing from a possible situation that might lead to a sin.

As a matter of fact the source we quote in Yoma is the third source of the 3 which are quoted in Makos.
Rashi explains that one who desires to join with the humble righteous will be granted favor & they will accept him as it says in Mishlei.
The gemara in Yoma continues to add

Be nice to people - is one of the greatest mitzvos & keys to success in life. Wealth is generally also a result of freindships. The same goes for good health.
Instead of harming people , assist them & your business will also prosper. The same word for wealth - osher , has another meaning eser which means give a tenth to charity. The Talmud says when you give a tenth Hashem will cause you to prosper.
One of the reasons for how this works is that when you look to help others , Hashem causes you to be noticed by others who happen to need to do business with you !
There is a significant lesson from the first murder in history. When Kayin killed Hevel one of his thoughts may have been , now I will acquire ( the meaning of his name ) more of the world. We can offer some reasons-
- we love them
- we owe it to them
- to merit longevity
- to make them feel good
* To please Hashem
Why does the Torah give a reason by honoring Parents , more so than by many other mitzvos ?
One answer is because someone might honor his parents for an ulterior motive in order so they give him benefits.
Thus Hashem is teaching how to relate to people , with our parents as the primary model - be nice to others & you will gain many benefits from the Creator who made you all.
The Talmud says , Either friendship or death & studies have proven that loneliness leads to depression & other problems ...
Freindships also lead to business success. When you help others because it is a mitzva to do so , Hashem has a way of sending things back to you. On the path ...
The Torah key to wealth is not help others so that they will become your customers & you will make money , rather , help others leshaim Shomayim to serve Hashem & He will send you wealth. On the path , should be for the right reason & you will gain more.

Weekly Mitzvah - Honoring Your Father and Mother
Family-Related Mitzvos
41: Honoring Your Father and Mother
"Respect your father and your mother..." (Shemos 20:12)
The Torah commands us to honor our father and mother, the two people who were Hashem's partners in bringing us into the world. This mitzvah has many practical aspects, including standing up for our parents, respecting their wishes, and caring for their needs. In fact, the Chayei Adam explains that there are three parts to this mitzvah: 1) to think highly of our parents; 2) to speak highly of them; and 3) to act on their behalf, as in caring for them (Chayei Adam 67:3)
Honoring them is considered Hashem's honor (Kiddushin 30b)
In the Ten Commandments, we are told "Honor your father and your mother, so that your days will be extended..." (ibid.). This is explained in two ways:
1) By helping and honoring your parents, you enable them to live longer. Thus, you gain that merit in return.
2) By showing that you honor those who helped bring you to life, you deserve
more life.
The Talmud (Kiddushin 30a) instructs us to learn how to honor our parents from a non-Jew, Dama ben Nesina, who gave up a potential profit of a huge sum of money in order to avoid waking his father. For that, the Talmud says, Hashem rewarded him with a red heifer, which he sold for exactly the amount he lost in not waking his father. We can ask three questions:
-What was his logic in not waking his father? Why didn't he rationalize, "The loss will be so great - I'll just wake my father this one time"?
-What would have happened if the key to the red heifer's corral had been under his father's pillow. Would he have lost this deal, too?
-Why did Hashem reward him with a red heifer? Why not just give him a treasure full of gold?
The answer is that Dama ben Nesina's logic was "My parents are the only two people in the world who gave me life. Thus, the are irreplaceable. The money I lose today, Hashem can send me tomorrow."
The red heifer was a unique entity, the only one of its kind in existence at the time. (There have only been nine of them in all of history, and the tenth will come in Mashiach's time [Rambam, Hilchos Para Adumah 3:4].). Thus, the Sages would have returned for it if the key was unavailable. It was only the sale of gems which was forfeited because the Sages found them somewhere else.
Hashem gave him a red cow, which was one of a kind, to reward him, measure for measure, for treating his parents with unique honor. This teaches us the great concept of treating our parents with proper respect, as they are the only ones who have granted us life!

One may not steal another persons sleep or their peace of mind. If someone is expecting you at a certain time , be careful not to disappoint them or to notify them of your delay.
Also do not steal compliments that are deserved. One who works hard all day to support the family should be praised & admired regularly. If he also goes to study Torah , she should make sure to say , I'm proud of you.
