Q. What is the logic of the law that a sneak thief has to be pay double for everything he steals ?

A. Rambam - so that he should lose the amount he tried to cause someone else to lose , measure for measure.

Q. But what difference is there between the payment for the principal item & the double payment ??

A. For "a" - pay as it was worth when he stole it ,
For "b" - pay per the value now at Beis Din.

Q. Is there a difference between returning the item itself or its cash value ?

A. Yes. If he stole an item which went up in value , if he broke it now & cannot return it - he pays the higher value.
If it broke by itself - he only pays the original value.

Q. What are the extra penalties for one who lied about money that he owed & he swore to back up his denial ?

A. He must return the principal amount , plus a fifth more & a korban asham gezeilos.

Q. How can he end up paying even more ?

A. If he denied the extra fifth & swore on that , he needs to add another fifth etc.

Q. At what age is an ox & a ram called by their adult titles ?

A. As soon as they are born.
