Based on Gitin 47a , there are 3 reasons :
- to try get the victim to forgive them
- so that the victim tastes better
- so that the victim puts up less resistance at dinnertime.
One of the lessons from this is that even cannibals know that you need to be a Giver before you can receive. !!!
