A beautiful and touching story that will give us much to think about. The story was told over by Rav Go'el Elkarif who said he heard it from the person to whom it happened.

There is a fellow who owns a jewelry store in Eretz Yisroel. One day, not long ago a nine year old girl walked into the store and said, "I am here to buy a bracelet". She looks through the glass cases and points to a bracelet that was three or four thousand dollars. The man behind the counter asked her, "You want to buy that bracelet?" And she says, "Yes". He says, "Wow, you have very good taste. Who do you want to buy it for?" She says, "For my older sister". He says, "Oh that is so nice! Why do you want to buy your older sister this bracelet?" The little girl says, "Because I don't have a mother or father, and my older sister takes care of us. So we want to buy her a present, and I'm willing to pay for it". She pulls out of her pocket a whole bunch of coins that totaled seven shekel, eighty agurot, which is a little less than two dollars. The fellow says, "Wow! That's exactly what the bracelet costs". He wraps up the bracelet and says, "You write a card to your sister while I wrap the bracelet". In a short amount of time, he finishes wrapping the bracelet, he wipes away his tears, and hands the little girl the bracelet.

A few hours later the older sister comes in and says" I'm terribly embarrassed. My sister should not have come here. She shouldn't have taken it without paying." He says to her, "What are you talking about?" She says, "What do you mean? This bracelet costs thousands of dollars. My little sister doesn't have thousands of dollars, she doesn't even have ten dollars. So she obviously didn't pay for it". The fellow who owns the jewelry store says, "You couldn't be more wrong. She paid me in full. She paid seven shekel, eighty agurot, and a broken heart. I want to tell you something. I am an alman, I lost my wife a number of years ago. People come into my store every single day. They come in and buy expensive pieces of jewelry, but all these people can afford it. When your sister walked in, for the first time in so very long since my wife had died, I once again felt what love means". He gave her the bracelet and wished her well.

Says, Rav Go'el Elkarif, we come to the Ribono Shel Olam and we want to buy something very expensive. We want to buy life, but we cannot afford it. We don't have the money to pay for it. We don't have the zechusim. So we come to the Ribono Shel Olam and we empty our pockets, with what? A kabbalah here and a kabbalah there; I'll keep cholov yisroel during the Asrers Yimei Teshuva, I'll keep pas yisroel like the Mishnah Brura says, I'll pick up the phone and call someone who is lonely, I wil learn an extra five minutes mussar, I will be kind, I won't speak lashon harah for two hours; something small. The Ribono Shel Olam says, "Oh, you don't know how long it's been since I've felt what love means". The Ribono Shel Olam sees how much we are willing to do, how much we love him, and he says, "You know what? You have touched my heart. Here it is, paid in full".

Have a great beginning to your Aseres Yemei Teshuva, and a great year.

Subject: Speak softly and carry a lot of wisdom

Hi Rav,

There's a story told about someone who saw their
rabbi's notes left on the lectern. In the margin
were notes about how to deliver different parts of
his message. One note said, "Slow down here and
emphasize." Another said, "Move away from the
lectern and approach the congregation." At one
point the note in the margin said, "Weak argument
here. Yell loudly."

Marriages deteriorate partly because of how
spouses speak to each other. I want to emphasize:
I'm not talking about what you say; I'm talking
about how you say it. Screaming at each other can
ruin things.

And like the rabbi giving a drusha, very often
people raise their voice when their message lacks
merit. Screaming indicates a weakness in your
argument.

On the other hand, if you words are measured,
intelligent, and sensitive, you can speak softly
and you'll be heard. In fact, if you speak softly,
you're more likely to be heard.

Shlomo Hamelach said, "The gentle words of the
wise are heard above the shouts of a king over
fools."

Gentle words spoken with wisdom get the most
attention.

When you yell at someone, they get defensive. It's
a natural protective response. It doesn't matter
how right you are or how much sense you make.
Ironically, if you scream, it's hard to hear you.

Keep this important lesson in mind, share it with
your spouse if you think that'll be helpful, and
practice speaking softly. Test it out and see if
lowering your voice doesn't get you heard.

Hi Rav,

In Genesis, Hashem asks Adam and Chava not to eat
from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. After
being tempted by the serpent, Adam and Chava
disobey Hashem and eat from the tree.

Yup, they blew it.

And, of course, your spouse blows it sometimes
too.

But we can learn a lot about how to conduct
ourselves in our marriage when our spouse blows it
by how Hashem treats Adam and Chava after their
blunder. You know what He does? He realizes what
they need and He gives it to them.

After Adam and Chava disobey Hashem they realize
they're naked and they feel embarrassed. Hashem
sees that they're embarrassed so he gives them
clothing.

He gives them clothing? Shouldn't He let them
suffer the consequences of their choice? Isn't He
condoning their behavior by continuing to care for
them? Let them be embarrassed, right?

No.

Love gives. Period. It's not complicated. And
that's what makes it so hard.

Loving someone means taking care of them, giving
them what they need, whether they deserve it or
not. In fact, it's that kind of unconditional
giving and caring that prevents a single mistake
in a marriage from spiraling out of control and
leading to more mistakes.

You see, usually, when one spouse blows it, the
other spouse uses that as justification to blow it
themselves. Of course, that only makes matters
worse.

But imagine if every time your spouse made a
mistake you tended to their need that was created
by that mistake.

For example, let's say you ask your spouse not to
leave the sewing box at the top of the basement
steps because if it gets knocked down it'll empty
and make a big mess. They ignore you and do it
anyway. And, in fact, your dog knocks the sewing
box down the basement steps and it makes a huge
mess.

What does your spouse need now?

Your spouse would need 2 things, I think:

1. Help cleaning up the sewing box pieces.
2. Relief from feeling stupid and wrong.

Normally, most spouses would say "I told you not
to"... and leave their spouse to clean up the mess
themselves; essentially allowing them to suffer
the practical and emotional consequences of their
mistake. This, of course, makes matters worse
between husband and wife, and begins the downward
spiral.

But why not be more like Hashem was with Adam and
Chava. It's true your spouse blew it, but that
created needs which you can now fulfill. You might
say to your spouse, "I told that dog to stay away
from the sewing box" (shifting the blame to the
dog and relieving their emotional guilt). And then
you might help them with the clean up (relieving
their practical burden).

There's no doubt that giving your spouse what they
need in the face of their mistake is a difficult
choice for you to make, but consider the
difference it would make in your marriage.

When your spouse makes their next mistake (that
won't take more than a week, right?), instead of
letting them suffer the consequences of their
choice, ease their pain. Whatever need your spouse
might have as a result of their mistake, take care
of it. Basically Rav, be like Hashem. I
know it's a tall task, but you can do it! And
it'll make a heavens worth of difference in your
marriage.

Dear Rav,

I hope you're enjoying and benefiting from the
Shalom Bayis 911 e-Course.

As you know, Shalom Bayis 911 is a free community
resource for the benefit of klal Yisrael. It's
non-profit and run 100% by volunteers.

Sometimes people ask, "How can I help? What can I
do to forward the Shalom Bayis 911 mission?"

Here are some quick and easy ways you can help.
Please pick one or two and contribute to the
cause.

SOCIAL MEDIA
If you use social media, like Facebook or Twitter,
post to your friends about the Shalom Bayis 911
e-Couse and include a link to
www.ShalomBayis911.org.

EMAIL LIST
Send a short email to your friends and family
informing them about the Shalom Bayis 911 e-Course
and include a link to www.ShalomBayis911.org. You
might consider including one of the Shalom
Bayis 911 articles as an attachment. Ask them to
forward your email to their friends, community
leaders, rabbis, and colleagues.

TELL YOUR RAV
Talk to your rav about Shalom Bayis 911. If he
already knows about it, tell him how it's helped
you. If he doesn't know about it, offer it to him
as a community resource that might help him in his
work with families.

SHUL BULLETIN
Try to get a short listing in your shul bulletin
for Shalom Bayis 911. Something as small and
simple as:

Shalom Bayis 911
A Free e-Course for Saving Your Marriage
www.ShalomBayis911.org

If that listing is there at just the right time
when someone needs it, you will have done them a
valuable service.

BLOG
Do you blog? Write a blog about Shalom Bayis 911.

DO YOU KNOW ANYONE IN THE JEWISH MEDIA?
Do you know any writers or publishers of Jewish
newspapers, magazines, or websites? Writers,
publishers, and owners of websites are always
looking for interesting stories and articles, and
maybe Shalom Bayis 911 would be of interest to
their readership.

EMAIL US YOUR TESTIMONIAL
Please email me what you think of the Shalom Bayis
911 e-course and how it's helped you. We'll post
your testimonial here
http://shalombayis911.org/user-praise.asp using
only your first name, or anonymously, if you
prefer. We can see from our web analytics that
people really do read these "praises" before
deciding whether or not to register.

EMAIL US YOUR HASKAMA
Are you a rav? Do you like what Shalom Bayis 911
is doing? Please email us your haskama and we'll
include it here
http://shalombayis911.org/haskamas.asp. We can see
from our web analytics that people really do read
these haskamas before deciding whether or not to
register.

DID I MISS ANYTHING?
If you have ideas about how people on this email
list could help Shalom Bayis 911, please email
your ideas to me and I'll add them to the above
list.

Rav, thank you for taking a moment to
consider how can help spread the good word.

Regards,

Mordechai
